Sort of Joe.

Joe Lee Wilson might just be the greatest ballad singer of his generation, evidenced by the singing on this video and on these two tracks from the fourth Oblivion release. But like the tree falling in the empty forest, mostly no one knows and it's why, 30 some odd years ago, I wanted us to be among his discoverers. It almost worked, but that's a story for another time.

I've been searching around for video of the Oblivion artists and I stumbled upon this weird artifact of Joe. Weird, because you really have to fget over the fact that you never see Joe actually singing, and just listen to his "You Are Too Beautiful." Don't ask me what was going on with the taping, but his beyond gorgeous reading of this Rogers and Hart completely wipes out the strangeness of it all.

I was living in Paris, summer of 1990. I worked on Ile St.Louis, selling sorbet, listening to Billie Holiday, when Joe Lee Wilson came to my window for a cone. He was happy to see somebody digging Billie and invited me to his show that night at Duc des Lombards. He put on a great show and I saw him a couple more times after that; when I told him I was leaving Paris, he invited me up to his place to meet his wife and drink some gin. He even gave me a cassette of one of the gigs I'd been to. I still treasure that tape and a picture someone took of me and Joe sharing beers at the Duc. Great memories!!
